Medical cannabis in Italy: prescriptions, documents and travel

Keep the clinical decision with the clinician

The Italian Ministry of Health describes medical cannabis preparations prescribed by doctors and prepared by pharmacists. That clinical route is different from buying a private membership card.

For a medical appointment, prepare a concise history of your treatment and the questions you want answered. Ask who would prescribe, dispense and follow up if treatment were appropriate, and request separate prices for each service. This page does not assess suitability or recommend a dose.

Know which prescription copy you have

The Ministry’s guidance says a copy of the prescription, stamped and signed by the dispensing pharmacist, should be given to the patient collecting a cannabis magistral preparation.

When collecting documents, label them clearly: clinical report, prescription, dispensing record or travel certificate. Ask the issuing professional to explain any missing or inconsistent information. Keep the medicine description visible in your private records so that a later question can refer to the exact preparation rather than a broad product category.

Read Italy’s current traveller information

Italy’s May 2026 submission to INCB lists a valid prescription, references the 2007 decree’s Annex I, and specifies a 30-day limit for narcotic and psychotropic medicines.

Treat this as a starting point for checking your particular itinerary. Prepare the departure and return dates, every transit country, the formulation and the proposed quantity. Ask the competent authority how the listed documentation applies to you before relying on it for a booking. Do not assume another traveller’s answer covers a different medicine.
